San Antonio – After an extensive six-month search, Operation Homefront announced that Mark Smith will join its team as President and Chief Executive Officer of the nonprofit organization on April 15. Smith brings 28 years of unique experience in military, business and the nonprofit arena to Operation Homefront.
Previously Smith was director of National Security Programs for the Philanthropy Roundtable, where he worked closely with many philanthropic leaders as well as government officials on a myriad of national security issues.
He began his career as an Army officer leading forward-deployed armor units in the U.S. and Germany after graduating from Washington & Lee University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He received his M.A. in strategic studies and economics from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University and went on to serve as an assistant professor of International Relations and National Security Studies at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. Smith subsequently served as special assistant to former Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), Gen. (Ret.) John R. Galvin. Smith separated from the Army in 1994 and became a vice president and chief of staff to the CEO of Cedel Bank (now Clearstream) in Luxembourg. He and his family then returned home to New York where he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operations Officer of Prudential Investment Management Services. Later as a consultant, he was hired by the Chairman of The Pacific Stock and Options Exchange in San Francisco where he led the project to launch the first fully electronic national stock exchange in the U.S., ARCA Exchange. After September 11, 2001, Smith decided to use his talents for the greater good, accepting a position as director of Strategic Business Development at Outward Bound before joining the Philanthropy Roundtable.
“Mark's unique background and intrinsic understanding of the community we serve will help him execute our mission of serving military families,” said Rob Wolford, Chairman of the Board of Operation Homefront. “He understands the need for a larger Operation Homefront presence among the military’s senior leadership and among Washington policymakers.”
Smith looks forward to the new position as a chance to expand his career-long service to others.
“I'm both honored and humbled to be given the opportunity to lead this outstanding organization, and to work closely with the board, staff and chapters around the country to serve our military families and wounded warriors who are bearing such an enormous burden,” Smith said.

Premier Online Community for Military Families on the Shortlist for “Oscars of the Internet”
SAN ANTONIO, TX -- The 12th Annual Webby Awards today nominated CinCHouse.com for the Best Lifestyle site of 2008.
CinCHouse.com was one of almost 10,000 sites nominated from more than 60 countries and all 50 states. It was selected as one of five finalists in the Lifestyles category, up against giants like Epicurious.com and Reebok.
Editor-in-Chief Regina Galvin said the prestigious recognition caps a comprehensive effort to improve content and quality. She also cited the nomination as a chance to bring greater awareness to issues affecting military families.
“The timing on this couldn’t be better, and to be showcased alongside such mainstream sites really increases our exposure to the general public,” Galvin said. “Despite seven years of war putting military issues into the mainstream media, there continues to be misconceptions of who military wives and women in uniform really are.
“That a nonprofit site, started by a military wife, edited by a military wife and largely maintained by military wives is going up against corporate titans for such a competitive award gives us great pride. It’s a testament to our determination to give voice to the military community.”
Winners will be announced on May 6, 2008 and honored at a star-studded gala in New York on June 10.
Hailed as the “Oscars of the Internet” by the “New York Times,” The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, including Web sites, interactive advertising, online film and video, and mobile Web sites. The Webby Awards is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-person judging academy whose members include Internet co-inventor Vinton Cerf, R/GA’s Chief Bob Greenberg, “Simpson's” creator Matt Groening, Arianna Huffington and Harvey Weinstein.
"The Webby Awards honors the outstanding Websites that are setting the standards for the Internet," said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. "CinCHouse.com’s Webby Award nomination is a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."
From now through May 1, online fans around the world can cast their own votes for CinCHouse.com in The Webby People’s Voice Awards presented by Nokia at http://pv.webbyawards.com.
Founded in 1996, The Webby Awards are known worldwide for its famous five-word speech limit. Past headline-grabbing speechmakers include Al Gore (“Please don’t recount this vote.”), Beastie Boys (“Can anyone fix my computer?”), and Prince (“Everything you think is true.”)
About CinCHouse.com
CinCHouse.com (an acronym for Commander-IN-Chief of the House, a military spouse) is the largest online community for military wives and women in uniform. It was founded in 1999 by Meredith Leyva, a Navy wife and author. Leyva knew first-hand how hard it was for military wives and their families to stay connected through constant moves, so she created a site to bring them all together, no matter where the military sent them. In response to the need for support for the families of deployed service members, CinCHouse.com members created the project that has evolved into a major nonprofit charity serving 34 military communities. Today CinCHouse.com operates as a program of the Operation Homefront family. From a good idea to a great organization, Operation Homefront understands and takes care of the needs of the military community.

SANTA ANA, CA. – Operation Homefront’s CinCHouse.com and Army Times Publishing Company (ATPCo) announced they have signed an exclusive agreement to share editorial content on each other’s Web sites and in ATPCo’s print publications, including its flagship, “Army Times.”
In this new partnership, ATPCo will feature CinCHouse.com articles in its online “Community” sections as well as in the “Lifelines” section of its print publications. CinCHouse.com will feature RSS feeds of news headlines from ATPCo’s Web sites as well as feature stories relevant to its online community of military wives and women in uniform. The partnership also opens the door for new collaboration on articles and promotions targeted toward young military families.

“’Army Times’ and its sister publications are the premier sources for hard news about the military because of the professionalism and caliber of their journalism,” said Regina Galvin, editor-in-chief of CinCHouse.com. “Because military spouses make critical decisions with their husbands about their future in the military, we feel strongly about keeping them informed with news from Army Times.”
Operated by Operation Homefront, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization serving military families, CinCHouse.com is the Internet’s largest online community for military wives and women in uniform. Content includes features on a range of topics geared toward military families, from parenting to politics. In its 10th-anniversary Netrospective, Yahoo named CinCHouse.com one of the 100 most important things to happen to the Internet in the last 10 years.
“Army Times,” “Navy Times,” “Air Force Times” and “Marine Corps Times” are the leading independent source of news and information for the military community. Each paper and its associated Web site are edited specifically for its branch of service and, together, they reach 72 percent — almost three-quarters of the entire active duty military every week.

Operation Homefront Village to Open to House Transitioning Wounded Warriors and their Families
Operation Homefront will cut the ribbon and host an open house at Operation Homefront Village, its first transitional housing complex for wounded warriors near Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. This 20-unit complex of two- and three-bedroom units will be fully furnished for families, complete with full utility services, Internet access, cable TV and telephone service. The community center will offer services including job placement, education assistance and financial management. The two facility buildings will be named after Medal of Honor recipients Jack Jacobs and Mike Thornton, both of whom are attending the ceremony.
WHAT: Opening Ceremony and Reception of Operation Homefront Village for Wounded
Warriors
WHEN: March 18, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.
WHERE: Operation Homefront Village, 7027 FM 78 in San Antonio
There are currently more homeless Vietnam veterans than there were American service members killed in that war, and recent studies show that 1 in 4 homeless are veterans. Operation Homefront is concerned that a combination of health problems and the 18-month bureaucratic outprocessing for wounded are driving current warriors into bankruptcy and ultimately homelessness. Even with no advertising of the village, there is a waiting list of families wanting to move in.
Operation Homefront Village will provide a free, stable home for families of wounded warriors who are completing their recovery, finishing school and job training programs, and working to move forward with their lives. The free, temporary housing will help some families rebuild their finances so that they may eventually qualify to buy permanent homes through Operation Homefront's Wounded Warrior Housing Initiative. Operation Homefront Village will also have a community center that will feature the following equipment and services:
• Computer work stations loaded with specialized software to accommodate disabilities.
• Counselors to assist with filing VA claims, state disability claims and social security claims.
• Educational assistance including help with college enrollment, scholarship applications, applying for VA educational benefits like the Montgomery GI Bill and Vocational Rehabilitation, and tutoring for college courses.
• Job integration programs, including resuming writing assistance and workshops, assistance with interviewing for and finding employment with “veteran friendly” companies, and assistance with applying for federal jobs, and quarterly job fairs.
• Monthly dinners for all residents.
• Video library for residents to check out DVDs, video gaming equipment and video games.
• Wounded Warrior Wives support group meetings.
• Food pantry of nonperishable food items.
• Morale events like furnishing Easter baskets, back to school backpacks and supplies, Thanksgiving food baskets, Christmas toys and other programs.
All of these benefits are free in addition to free rent, thanks to the generosity of sponsors like like CDW-G and the Wal-Mart Foundation. Operation Homefront anticipates creating Village communities in 2008 in San Diego, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C. Sponsorship opportunities are available in San Antonio as well as the other locations. For more information on sponsorships, please contact Amy Palmer at 210-659-7756 or amy@operationhomefront.net.

Mr. Knotts is the Director, Corporate & Community Affairs, in the Corporate Communications office at Lockheed Martin Headquarters in Bethesda. In that position, he is responsible for community outreach, philanthropy, and volunteer activities for the corporation.
Mr. Knotts initiated Lockheed Martin’s “United in Gratitude” initiative to provide support to service members and their families. The support spans different programs to benefit active duty service members, families, wounded warriors, guard and reserves, veterans, and transitioning military.
“I am pleased to be affiliated with an organization like Operation Homefront that does so much for our service members and their families,” said Jim Knotts. “As a veteran, I understand the extreme sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. The mission of Operation Homefront is perfectly aligned with Lockheed Martin’s initiatives to honor our troops and help them continue to serve us all.”

Davis Amendment could save servicemembers up to $1,500 over 15 months
WASHINGTON – While servicemembers and members of the National Guard are serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and abroad, the interest on their student loans is piling up costing them up to $1,500 over 15 months. The House approved an amendment offered by Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) to stop that interest from accruing when a servicemember goes on active duty.
The amendment, included in the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, is based on a bill introduced by Davis (H.R. 3748). The amendment passed on voice vote.
“Military service requires those who serve our country to make tremendous sacrifices – personally, professionally, and financially,” said Rep. Davis, Chairwoman of the Military Personnel Subcommittee. “When our brave men and women deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan, the last thing they want to worry about is how they will be able to afford their student loans when they get back.”
Last July, Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) introduced a similar bill, the Interest Relief Act, in the United States Senate.
“The principle behind this bill is very simple: When Americans go off to serve their country during time of war, the government should not charge interest on their federal student loans,” Senator Bayh said. “Our service men and women, and their families, are already putting so many aspects of their lives on hold during their deployment. This is one more way we can honor their sacrifice and ease their transition from active duty service. It is relief we can and should provide for our soldiers right now.”
Currently, active duty servicemembers are charged interest on their student loans while they are abroad defending our country. Last year, Congress passed legislation allowing servicemembers to get a deferment on their student loans while they are activated. But this deferment only applies to repayment of the principal and existing interest on these loans; it does not prevent new interest from accruing.
The Davis amendment will prohibit student loan interest from accruing for all servicemembers while they are on active duty up to a maximum of 60 months. This would save the average servicemember between $1,183 and $1,479 over the course of a 12-15 month activation period.
Congress is considering extending the programs under the Higher Education Act (HEA) through 2012. The College Opportunity and Affordability Act (H.R. 4137) reauthorizes the HEA to help students from low-income families afford a college education and provide federal aid to higher education institutions. H.R. 4137 was approved by the House by a vote of 354-58. The Senate passed its version (S. 1642) in July 2007.

Evan’s Landing at Luna Pier, Mich., Joins Growing List of Homes
Specially Discounted for Wounded Warriors
SANTA ANA, CA – Rowhouse Environment, LLC joined a growing list of builders offering steep discounts on new homes for wounded warriors. Its Evan’s Landing condominium project at Luna Pier near Detroit is welcoming wounded warriors with special incentives and prices.
Located next to Lake Erie, the homes feature two-car garages, two balconies on each unit, bath and a half, a laundry center located next to the bedrooms and low utility bills because of high energy performance.
“We already have three service members living at Evan’s Landing, and we are happy to take the extra steps necessary to show our support for the troops,” said Wayne Nowakowski of Rowhouse Environment.
Meredith Leyva, co-founder of Operation Homefront, praised the company’s commitment to wounded soldiers.
“The Evan’s Landing project really adds variety to some of the fantastic home opportunities that builders are offering through our Wounded Warrior Housing Initiative,” Leyva said.
The site is already VA-approved so that active duty and veterans can take advantage of the “no down payment” option of VA loans. While the average sale price is $130,000, Rowhouse Environment is offering to either discount the unit by 10 to 15 percent or arrange to have chair lifts added to the unit for easy access to all floors. Lease to own options are also available.

Houston Housing Authority Commits 201 Homes to
Operation Homefront’s Wounded Warrior Housing Initiative
Charming revitalized homes available at up to a 15% discount throughout Houston metro area
SANTA ANA, CA – Operation Homefront announced it has received a commitment from the Houston Housing Authority on 201 revitalized homes throughout the Houston metropolitan area so long as they remain on the market. Wounded warriors will receive a 5 to 15 percent discount off the repaired sales price of charming homes already priced at $100,000 or lower.
"This is a win-win for Houston, which is committed to being the best city in the nation in how it treats its veterans," said Mayor Bill White. "We get help with a businesslike, orderly disposition of some property held by the Houston Housing Authority. And more importantly, our wounded veterans get an opportunity to own those homes. "
“We are thrilled that the City of Houston is welcoming wounded warriors with special discounts,” said Meredith Leyva, co-founder of Operation Homefront. “With as many as 130,000 families qualified, I consider it our challenge to help sell a good portion of these homes.”
Real estate agents and appraisers Shad Bogany and Frank Lucco at ERA Bognay Properties are the City of Houston’s contracted representatives managing the program. More information is available by contacting Mr. Lucco at 281-596-0066 or Frank@FrankLucco.com or by visiting their web site to see immediately available homes at www.shadbogany.com. SANTA ANA, CA – Despite public concerns about veterans’ charities, Operation Homefront continues to receive awards and top reviews by charity monitoring groups including the Better Business Bureau which is testifying before Congress today. In fact, Operation Homefront also has been acclaimed by Charity Navigator, America’s leading non-profit evaluator, as being among the elite and most highly regarded of charities in the Nation by receiving Charity Navigators coveted 4-star rating.
As the nonprofit sector continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, savvy donors are demanding more accountability, transparency and quantifiable results from the charities they choose to support with their hard-earned dollars. In this competitive philanthropic marketplace, Charity Navigator highlights the fine work of efficient charities and provides donors with essential information needed to give them greater confidence in the charitable choices they make. Among the many charities evaluated, Operation Homefront has received this 4-Star rating for its ability to efficiently and openly manage its finances. Less than a quarter of the charities Charity Navigator evaluates received their highest rating, indicating that Operation Homefront outperforms the majority of nonprofits in America with respect to fiscal responsibility.
“This ‘exceptional’ designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Operation Homefront from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.” said Trent Stamp, President of Charity Navigator, in a letter to Operation Homefront.
“The designation of such honorable ratings and reviews from Charity Navigator, the BBB and others is positive proof of our strong fiscal responsibility as well as our financial strategy to ensure Operation Homefront is always there to help our troops and military families.” said Amy Palmer, Executive Vice President of Operations and Business development.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Eric Schuller
President Operation Homefront Illinois
630-901-9564 (cell)
SUBJECT: FREE Counseling service for Military Families
Operation Homefront Illinois is proud to join forces with Soldiers Project and the Barr-Harris Children’s Grief Center to offer free counseling services to Servicemembers and their families.
A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) concluded that a significant number of veterans returning from service overseas are not getting the care they need for their symptoms of anxiety, depression, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). According to a recent CBS News article, up to 42 percent of National Guard and Reserve Servicemembers suffer from such PTSD symptoms as panic attacks, moodiness, irritability, flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and difficulty sleeping and concentrating.
There is a clear need for both Servicemembers and their families to be able to access help in times of stress. Many military families are under even greater stress during the holiday season, especially when they are dealing with separation from a loved one who is in a combat zone or whose return they await. “We want people to know that help is available if they are suffering or feeling unsettled or disillusioned now that they’re back home,” says Kate Schechter, founder of Soldiers Project/Chicago. “We also recognize the impact that traumatized soldiers can have on the communities that they return to, and we are as concerned about the ripple effect of trauma in local communities as we are about the individual experiences of those who have directly experienced war-related trauma.”
Soldiers Project and the Barr-Harris Children’s Grief Center offer services to Servicemembers and their families, adults and children alike. Soldiers Project concentrates on working with adults (Servicemembers and their spouses/partners, parents, or other adult family members), while Barr-Harris concentrates on helping children of Servicemembers. Children often do not know how to deal with the realities of separation and the stresses of having a parent in a combat zone, and the Barr-Harris program is designed to help them be able to cope with the anxieties they experience during or after a parent’s deployment.
“Children whose parents have been deployed, especially those parents who are in harm’s way, may experience a wide range of emotional and behavioral difficulties. This may include: anxiety, sleep disturbances, appetite changes, decreased academic performance, an increase in anger and fighting, whining and clinginess.” said Sharon Williams of Barr-Harris, “Children may also experience significant distress when the parent returns home as the family tries to readjust. We would like communities, schools and families to recognize the additional challenges that these children face when their parent is deployed, and that help is available to assist children in coping with these struggles.”
“I would like to thank both Soldiers Project and the Barr-Harris Children’s Grief Center for coming forward to assist the families of our Servicemembers”, said Eric Schuller, President of Operation Homefront Illinois, “We need to ensure that our men and women in uniform and their families get all the assists that they need during and after their deployments.”
These programs give families a much-needed opportunity to reach out in confidence to mental health professionals who can assist them. For more information please visit www.Operationhomefront.net/Illinois.
Operation Homefront provides emergency assistance and morale to our troops, to the families they leave behind, and to wounded warriors when they return home. Since its inception, Operation Homefront has provided critical assistance to more than 45,000 military families in need nation-wide. Operation Homefront Welcomes New North Carolina Chapter Head
Santa Ana, CA - Operation Homefront, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for our soldiers and the families they leave behind, is pleased to welcome a new president to its North Carolina chapter.
Jane Weaver-Sobel, who has devoted her career to the nonprofit sector, takes the helm of one of the busiest state chapters of a national nonprofit serving military families.
With my background in the arts and my experience with non-profits, I can bring energy to this position with creative ways to raise money and to help families across North Carolina,¨ Weaver-Sobel said. With five bases here, we have a huge number deployed to the war, and we want to make sure that those who are left behind know that we are here if they need us.¨
Originally from Iowa, Weaver-Sobel says her small-town upbringing and family ties to military members have fostered a dedication to serving those who serve in uniform and their families.
I have a passion for helping the underdog, those who are suffering under challenging circumstances - it's real important to me that those who have the abilities and resources be guided to help those that need help,¨ Weaver-Sobel said. Most people will help if they're aware of the problem.¨
Weaver-Sobel is joining the ranks of about 4,500 volunteers - mostly military wives - who work in 34 chapters nationwide to provide emergency assistance, support and morale to active duty, guard and reserve troops and their families, as well as wounded warriors when they return home. Operation Homefront was launched in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by a Navy wife determined to help families of deployed soldiers.
Weaver-Sobel will organize volunteer efforts to find and assist families North Carolina, as well as running Operation Homefront's toy drive in partnership with Dollar Tree stores throughout the state. It's part of a national toy drive that runs through Dec. 15. Donors can purchase toys in more than (how many?) Dollar Tree stores throughout the region and leave them in drop-off receptacles. Volunteers will collect the toys and help distribute them to area military children in time for the holidays.
Anyone interested in helping out with the toy drive or other Operation Homefront projects should call 703-366-0295 or email nc@operationhomefront.net. For more information about Operation Homefront, visit www.operationhomefront.net.
MORE ABOUT OPERATION HOMEFRONT
Operation Homefront (OH) is a grassroots, volunteer-based community solution that matches the needs of troops and military families with deployed service to the charitable outreach of local volunteers and businesses. Beginning in San Diego shortly after September 11, 2001, the organization now has 31 chapters that have sprouted up throughout the United States in response to urgent requests from military families. In acknowledgement of its effectiveness and to enhance collaboration, the Defense Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Operation Homefront, a rare honor held only by a few charities including the USO and YMCA.
In general, services fill a just-in-time urgent need, and are designed to counteract the Murphy's Law¨ of deployments. Crises typically occur after a service member has deployed and the spouse and children are left alone -- often financially strapped -- to cope. While Operation Homefront can flexibly address nearly any need, typical cases include:
auto repair or donation of a used vehicle
home and appliance repair
distribution of refurbished computers for families to stay in touch with their deployed loved one
moving and transportation assistance
baby items to help welcome a new member
of the family
Operation Homefront understands the needs of today's military community, which generally consists of younger families of deployed service members, in lower pay grades, in all services of the armed forces, including Reserves and National Guard. These families come from the cross section of American society and enter service with varying degre
