OH Villages Bethesda Welcomes the McComber Family

Infantry squad leader, Staff Sgt. Drew McComber has deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan.  During his last trip to Afghanistan, his unit was conducting clearing operations along a river bank when an IED exploded.  Drew was peppered with shrapnel. He was burned. He sustained injuries to both of his eyes and his right arm.

Doctors shipped him home where he spent 35 days as an inpatient at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His parents and then-girlfriend, Anna, rushed to his side.  As he recovered, Drew transitioned to a Warrior Transition Brigade where he began the long process of medically retiring. He and Anna married. Drew completed several federal internships. Still, the couple was struggling without a consistent source of income. Operation Homefront gave the new family a safe place to build their future.

Now, Drew and Anna live at the Operation Homefront Village in Bethesda. Their first child, Rebecca, was born in September. Drew is earning his degree in intelligence studies and is working to make a smooth transition from his military career to the civilian world.  “As the transition happens you kind of have a blank spot where you have no real source of decent income, he said. “Operation Homefront stepped in and gave us somewhere to stay while we were in that middle ground trying to get it all figured out and make it work. They have been the biggest help.”
