Recipients of the President's Volunteer Award

Recipients of the President's Volunteer Award

At Operation Homefront Villages we are so thankful for the volunteers that help us continue to serve our wounded warriors. They put in countless hours working with our families, helping at events, answering phones and supporting us in every endeavor.  At OHV San Antonio, we are happy to announce that two of our volunteers received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes and honors volunteers, sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives.

Dorothy Shaw has been a volunteer for OH Villages S.A. for the past 5 years. She served in the Air force from 1951-1954, and supported her husband who served in the Air Force for 33 years, Chief Master Sergeant John Shaw.  She offers words of encouragement and guidance to our service members who see her as a mother and a mentor. Dorothy is also a member of the VFW in Kirby, TX and served as the president of the Ladies Auxiliary for three years.

Ali Yantes has been a volunteer for OH Villages S.A. for the past 3 years. She is the peer-to-peer facilitator of our BEITZ group (Bring Everyone in the Zone).  She grew up hearing her uncle’s stories of their time in the military and this began her commitment to veterans.  In 2011, she was hired at IHG Army Hotels, which services wounded warriors after they have been released from in-patient treatment at SAMMC. During this time, she met a wounded warrior who saw her commitment to veterans and referred her to Operation Homefront Village San Antonio, TX. Ali has helped us partner with other non-profits such as Hero 2 Hired, Military Veteran Peer Network, Grace After Fire and The Center for Healthcare Services.

Our volunteers enrich the lives of our soldiers and give new meaning to the work we do. Congratulations to Dorothy and Ali for receiving such a great award.
