Learn About Our OH Villages

SAN ANTONIO     BETHESDA     SOCAL

  • The OH Villiages offer two- and three-bedroom rent-free apartment homes which serve as transitional/temporary housing for wounded warriors who have or are in the process of retiring or separating from the military.
  • While living at the OH Villages, wounded warriors and their families are also provided with full utility services, Internet access and laptop, cable TV and telephone service
  • OHV-is the first transitional housing facility of its kind. The village-concept was developed in response to the serious health problems and the long and tedious bureaucratic out-processing that wounded warriors have to endure.
  • Through our Community Center we offer a myriad of services including financial planning, career counseling, support groups for wounded warriors and their spouses, marriage counseling, and readjustment counseling through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • The stable home environment allows wounded warriors to complete their healthcare and recovery, and allows soldier and spouse to pursue their education, employment, and prepare for their relocation to an apartment or into their own home.
  • Soldiers and their families are referred to OH Village (San Antonio) by the U.S. Army Wounded Warrior Program, case workers at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Center for the Intrepid (CFI), Audie Murphy Veterans Affairs Hospital, and also by current and past residents.
  • OH Villages work with active duty, Guard and Reserves from all branches of the service.
  • OH Villages coordinate and present a series of monthly outings and events designed to boost morale and build community among the wounded warriors and their families.
  • OH Villages apartments are sponsored by the generous support of major corporations including Boeing, Wal-Mart Foundation, and the PGA Tour.
  • OH Villages apartments are ADA compliant and able to accommodate wounded warriors in wheelchairs or with special needs.
  • Wounded warriors live at the OH Villages free-of-charge so they can rebuild their financial foundation as they rebuild their health.
  • Through our Community Center, OH Villages also provide a food pantry, baby and household supplies, extra beds, a DVD rental library, a resource library with over 200 reference books, a business center, video gaming equipment and video games.
  • Operation Homefront Village – San Antonio,TX was opened March 2008; Bethesda, MD was opened December 2010 and Oceanside, CA was opened April 2011 .
  • OH Villages are operated by Operation Homefront, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit created in February 2002 as a local effort (in San Diego) which has evolved into a major non-profit organization.
  • In its daily collaboration with the U.S. Army Wounded Warrior Program and other Army case workers, Operation Homefront quickly realized that there is almost no temporary housing in America for wounded warriors who have retired or separated from the military. Most active duty wounded warriors receiving treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) or the Center for the Intrepid (CFI) are able to live in the barracks, base housing, the Fisher House, or the Powless Guest House.
  • Additional emergency and day-to-day assistance is provided by state chapters such as Operation Homefront’s Texas Chapter –one of 30 chapters nationwide.
  • In 2008 the National office of Operation Homefront together with its 30 chapters raised $32 million. In 2008, Operation Homefront met over 63,000 needs for military families.
  • Operation Homefront provides direct services that alleviate a military family’s or individual’s actual/complete emergency financial burden, as well as counseling and/or recovery support.
  • Operation Homefront also provides the following types of immediate assistance: for emergency food; urgent/critical healthcare assistance; critical baby items; college scholarships for spouses and children; vehicle repairs and donations; furniture and household items; emergency home repairs; computers, maintenance and repairs; and vehicle and home remodels for our disabled wounded warriors.
