Great Expectations - A Military Baby Shower

Great Expectations - A Military Baby Shower

17 JULY in Norman OK, OHOK hosted “Great Expectations-a military baby shower” for almost 100 new military moms. The shower was a great example of what is locally known as the Oklahoma standard…generous community support for our military families. The lucky participants got to pick the topics covered, and the team of volunteers developed party games as well as group sessions. The ladies were able to relax, eat yummy goodies, and ask questions of a panel of experts. Some of the topics covered were stress management, and infant safety. The most requested segment was new mommy fitness-so we had a little Zumba class. Ladies got to go home with a stuffed diaper bag, a new printer, books, resources, and new friends. Almost everyone won something! The total cost of the shower between cash donations, goods, and services was approximately $48,000. We also started what will be an OHOK tradition: Feed the Pig. We had a ceramic pig that sat at the VIP table throughout the event. VIPs were asked to ‘feed the pig” throughout the event. At the end of the event, I explained that the ladies were all being blessed with gifts, and that before they made their way to the car, they might want to lighten their load a little. I suggested that they look for change in the bottom of their purses, so they too could feed the pig. A lucky mom was going home with the pig. She was the cutest thing ever…and is using the money to purchase a 3D ultrasound. Her husband is deployed and she wants to do that for him. There was almost $296.00 in that pig! One of volunteers, Virginia Hatcher treated the ladies to the most hilarious song, written specifically for this event. It won hands down as the ladies favorite moment.
