Veteran Awarded Home At Tampa Bay Lightning Game

We were honored to once again join with Chase to award a mortgage-free home to U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant Joseph Mulgado and his family at a recent Tampa Bay Lightning game. The home, awarded as part of our Homes on the Homefront program, is located in Naples, Florida and the family moved in this fall.

Learn more about Master Sergeant Mulgado:

Joseph Mulgado was born in Miami, Florida, and grew up in Leisure City. Having desires to serve his country, support his wife and child, obtain a college education, and travel the world, Joseph decided to enlist within the U.S. Air Force in 1998 in Miami.

During his service, Joseph would serve in a number of locations. Florida, Texas, New Mexico, and North Carolina were some of the locations he served on the homefront. He also deployed to various locations overseas as well, including Uzbekistan (on the border of Afghanistan), Djibouti, and Balad.

As a result of his two combat deployments, Joseph was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. His years of service and sacrifice however would not go unrecognized. He earned a number of awards and medals leading up to his retirement in 2015.

However, the family has had to face many hardships.

“My post-traumatic stress and major depression keep me from working or seeking gainful employment,” said Joseph. “My days consist of seeking treatment for PTSD as well as other illnesses and injuries from my time in service. I try and go out but often struggle to leave the house for fear of crowds and tired from my medications.”

Although things are difficult for Joseph and his family, they push through to make enough time to volunteer at their local church. Having heard about Operation Homefront’s Homes on the Homefront program, Joseph and his family immediately applied and were awarded the home. Joseph and his family are now living in their mortgage-free home. He lives with his wife Clara and daughter Aryanna. His son, Joseph Jr., recently left for Air Force Basic Military Training to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Their future plans are to focus on getting better, mentally and physically. The home will allow him to be closer to his family and provide the immediate support. Having a home means so much to Joseph and his family.

“I want to thank Operation Homefront and Chase for this home, which will mean so much to us,” said Joseph. “It will allow me to focus on my recovery and be closer to my relatives.”

“Being in Naples will have us in close proximity to enjoy the beach, nature, and other places to see in the nearby large cities,” said Joseph. “The home is close enough to allow Aryanna, my daughter, to attend a nearby university. It will also allow me to be closer to the VA, here in Naples, for my treatment.”
