A CONNECTION – Boice/Metcalf Family
Our family tree proudly hangs the flag of every branch of service. My daughter knows that both her grandfathers served during times of trouble at home as well as across the sea. She knows some of the sad stories about troops returning from "war" and how they were treated in the late 60’s and early 70’s – the war her Grandfathers fought in. For example when my Dad came home the reception was a lot different. He could not even wear his uniform off base without having things thrown at him or screams of "baby killer" hurled at him. It made my daughter sad and she wanted to help show that now it is different for those serving, those returning and the families they leave at home.
Christmas Eve 2009, my Dad passed away. So, in memory of my Dad, CDR Conrad Metcalf, a retired Naval Commander, with over 25 years active duty, most of it as a Naval pilot, as well as 13 years teaching NJROTC, our family is committed to serve through donations and volunteering in his name with Operation Homefront DC Metro Chapter for as long as there is a need. There is a Wounded Warrior in need of a Zero-Gravity Chair to help ease his pain and aid his recovery – our family will be making a donation to that need. Go to the website’s Current Needs page and see who you can make a connection with.
The needs of our US active duty military families under stress continue. We hope you will consider the Operation Homefront DC Metro Chapter when giving to charitable causes at year’s end. And now, through Operation Homefront CONNECTION (CONNECTION), there is an additional need that your donation may help address.
When a military family of a deployed or wounded warrior is unable to overcome a problem, too often the circumstances leave them feeling completely isolated. Hearing “thanks” is not enough to lessen these feelings of isolation. To help alleviate these feelings, this year we’re offering CONNECTION– a new means by which your donation can go a step further beyond thank you.
With CONNECTION, members of the community give military families under stress special strength through inspiration. By sharing the name – and possibly the unique story and picture – of another service member or military family, CONNECTION strives to help military families understand that, not only are they not alone, but that in a unique, personal manner, they may see that other military families have also dealt with hardship and grief and that there is a special appreciation for their continued support and contribution to our nation’s security.
