Did you know? It will be a hard winter for Military Families Struggling to Afford Even the Basic Needs
Approximately 106,000 active duty soldiers
live in the DC Metro area. And everyday more families flock to the
Walter Reed and Fort Belvoir Hospitals to be with their Wounded Warriors.
Military families continue to move into the area as their loved one is
Deployed from area installations like Fort Meade, APG, Andrews, Bolling and
more. The DC Metro Chapter serves wounded warriors and Military families
located near 17 area installations and at National Guard armories and Reserve
centers.

KEEP IN
MIND
Food costs in the DC Metro area for a
family of four is about $868 per month based on figures from the USDA Low Cost
Food plan. This figure assumes that families prepare and eat all meals at
home.
According to the Defense Commissary Agency, food
stamp usage at on-post commissaries has risen from about $285,000 in 2001 to
$1.4 million in 2011.
Operation Homefront uses grocery
gift cards to assist families in crisis; typically $100 for a week's worth of
groceries.
The DC Metro Chapter collects cards during
the holidays to distribute all year long. Our supplies are running low. You
can help replenish our supply with the purchase of a grocery gift card or by
organizing a gift card drive through your church, community organization,
school or workplace.
Contact the chapter at dc@operationhomefront.net
if you are interested.
According to a 2011 report
by Kiplinger's, the DC Metro region has the 6th highest cost of living
in the United States. The DC Metro Chapter targets our services to the lowest
earning E1 through E6 ranking service members who earn base salaries of
$17,604 - $31,644 per year. You can help ease the stress on a
military family needing food assistance by donating to Operation
Homefront DC Metro Chapter. The chapter provides food assistance to
active duty families struggling to make ends meet.
